What Counts as a Dispossession and What Doesn’t?

Dispossession happens when a player with the ball is tackled by an opponent, leading to a loss of possession. It only counts as a dispossession🍌 if the player is not trying to dribble past a defender.

It’s not counted♐ when a player attempts to dribble past a player but fails, as that is as an unsuccessful take-on.

Additionally, dispossessions tend to happen further up the pitch as attackers try to push past the opponent’s defence. If a player loses the ball due to a bad touch or a ball going out of play, this is not counted among possession stats.

🍎 Below are the top three most dispossessed players from all the available leagues in the 2022/23 season. Not a great list to find your name on.

🀅 Below are the players who have been dribbled past the most in 2022/23. It’s worth mentioning that the top 20 are all either midfielders or forwards and that defenders are less likely to get dribbled past, since their main objective is to stop that very thing from happening.

🍸 You may be wondering, “Are there even betting markets on player dispossessions?” Good question. Not exactly, but there are some brilliant markets which go perfectly hand-in-hand with the stats provided. Here are a couple:

Tackles

When players are tackled, they often become dispossessed. Therefore, players who are routinely dispossessed are therefore tackled more often than other players. Consequently, the stats above are great for betting on total amount of tackles🍌. You can bet on individual player tackles as well, but that’s harder to predict solely from this table.

Fouls

Using the same logic as above, if a player is dispossessed, they're tackled. But what if the tackle isn't executed properly? Well, that results in a foul. The good news here is that you can either bet on a total number of match fouls or player fouls betting🐬. While this in itself is more challenging, the strategy is still sound.

ও It's easy to overlook or be sceptical of dispossessed player statistics. However, their value is undeniable when applied correctly. If you have familiarised yourself with the data above and read through our tips, you’re sure to find some really great opportunities to bet on!

In the 2022/23 season, Brenden Aaronson was dispossessed 81 times for Leeds – the most in the Premier League that season.

♐Possession statistics relate to the amount of times a particular team has control of the ball. This statistic is often calculated as a percentage.

🍬Having high possession is definitely a plus, as it means that the team has more control over the ball, securing them from attacks and freeing them up to create more offensive opportunities. Of course, all the possession in the world doesn’t necessarily guarantee a win or even a goal.

༺In football, being dribbled past occurs when a player runs past a defender, who attempts to stop them but is unsuccessful.
